groninger Expands Production in the US

The filling machine manufacturer groninger is investing in its US site in Charlotte. Around half a million US dollars were spent on a five-axis CNC system. With this, the Crailsheim-based family company would like to further increase its production depth on site and offer even faster service.

The global family company groninger is expanding its production depth in the USA and is investing around half a million dollars in a new CNC system at the US location in Charlotte, North Carolina. As a result, the German filling machine manufacturer is further accommodating the high volume of incoming orders and the demand for services, products and know-how from groninger in the North American market.

“The US market is booming and is one of our most important markets,” explains Heiner Dornburg, Managing Director of groninger USA LLC, adding “This is why we would like to further expand our service branch to be able to offer our customers on-site even faster service and better product availability.”

The new five-axis CNC system was put into operation in early summer, after a three-axis system had been installed three years prior.

“The demands our customers are placing on us are becoming increasingly complex — in many respects.” On the one hand, the production components themselves are becoming increasingly complex, on the other hand, the customer expects — and rightly so — these components to be available more quickly, says Dornburg.

After 150 days, the US Managing Director is now taking stock of the expanded machine park. “We are able to supply our customers with parts up to three times faster if we manufacture them here on-site instead of purchasing them from Germany,” says Dornburg. Of course, this is not always possible, “but wherever it’s possible, it’s definitely worthwhile. This creates a real added value for our customers. We are very satisfied with that.”

The success of the investment proves that the investment is right. In the previous year, for the first time, more parts were manufactured or purchased in the US than sourced from Germany — without the number of components sourced from Germany declining.

“This creates a real added value for our customers.”

Now, according to Dornburg, the production depth in the US will be expanded even further, thus ensuring even faster service in the future. “We want to send a positive message to our North American customers. Our company’s philosophy has always been “We are where our customers are.” With the expansion of the machine park, we are now living up to this promise even more,” the Managing Directors, Volker and Jens Groninger, are in agreement.

Groninger has had its own branch in the US for almost a quarter of a century — initially in Basking Ridge near New Jersey; later in Charlotte, North Carolina. Groninger USA opened a new location here in 2012, which now employs over 60 people.  Continuously growing.

groninger USA has been steadily expanded over the past few years. Today, the US branch is able to maintain complete filling and closing systems with its own staff and to manufacture the necessary spare parts. For this purpose, among other things, an “Apprenticeship Program” has been launched. In other words, groninger is training junior staff in the US based on the German model in order to meet the high quality standards for skilled workers at all locations around the world.
